Deadline looms fornominations to localcommunity councils

Chryston, Moodiesburn and Stepps residents are being invited to stand for their local community councils – with a September 1 deadline for nominations.

Elections take place every four years, and existing community councillors will stand down on October 7.

Returning officer June Murray said: “Community councils are voluntary organisations, run by local people who care about their communities, and have an important part to play in local democracy.

“They should listen to the views of residents and work closely with the local authority to represent those views in local decision making.

“Community councils are consulted on planning and licensing applications, and take part in the Local Area Partnership meetings, and members will received training from the local authority to support them in their role.”

If more nominations are received than there are vacancies an election will be held for those community councils.

Nomination packs have been sent to community councils, and are also available on North Lanarkshire Council’s website.
