The Lenzie Street Design Project is a partnership project between Sustrans Scotland and East Dunbartonshire Council that began in September 2016.

The aim is to enhance public spaces in the village, make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to walk, cycle and access facilities in the area, and improve access to public transport.

Two events were held at Lenzie Old Parish Church, with dozens of people dropping by during the afternoon to look at the collected information, and talk to representatives of East Dunbartonshire Council and Sustrans Scotland.

In the evening those attending included Lenzie Community Council, andmembers of groups for people with physical and sensory impairments..

Attendees were given time to discuss and reflect on some of the known issues in the area and were able to work up options for the potential re-design of the space using maps and scale models of street furniture, cars, trees, benches and planters amongst other items.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: “This project will see Lenzie village centre improved - with plans inspired and led by comments and feedback.”

Paul Ruffles, project coordinator (street design), Sustrans Scotland, said, “Despite the cold weather, we were really encouraged by the number of local people who dropped in during the day and those who took an active part in the design workshop.

“The workshop itself was a really constructive event with a genuine mix of people of different ages and abilities willing to discuss the issues and their aspirations for Lenzie, and work up

new design proposals”.

The first stage design proposals will be displayed in Lenzie and promoted locally in late February 2017.

Local people and representatives of special interest groups will have a direct opportunity to

review and comment on design proposals before they progress onto a second stage.

The aim is to trial agreed design proposals in May 2017.
