Diana awards for Hillpark mentors

PUPILS from Hillpark secondary have been presented with Diana awards for their outstanding contribution to the school as autism unit buddies.

The award — in memory of the late Diana, princess of Wales — is for youngsters who make a valuable contribution to their community, with a special focus on mentoring initiatives.

The 15 southside pupils have been working with younger autistic students at breakfast club and during lunchtime activities — and have made some friendships in the process.

Award recipient Sunrise Ishimwe explained: “I was very privileged to have the opportunity to work as an AU buddy.

“It was a wonderful experience and helped me develop my interpersonal skills.

“I would definitely recommend this to any other pupil who is looking for a leadership opportunity.”

Councillor Stephen Curran, Glasgow city council’s executive member for education and young people, presented the pupils with their awards, and learned all about their commitment to younger members of the school from autism unit teacher Julie MacRae.

Hillpark head teacher Joan Donnelly added her congratulations to the award recipients.
