District gears up for 2014 Games cycle events

One of the most prestigious events of 2014 Games will be the cycling Time Trial - which starts at Glasgow Green before winding its way through East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and then back to the Green.

Some of the world’s top cyclists will be saddling up as they go for gold at the Games, with the men taking on the 40km route and women competing across 30km.

Both cycling Time Trial routes have now been confirmed by the organisers of Glasgow 2014.

Roads in and around parts of Bishopbriggs and Lenzie will be used for the Time Trial on Thursday, July 31. There will also be a ‘familiarisation’ exercise the day before, which will not involve road closures.

It means that some of the most dramatic duels for medals will be played out partly in East Dunbartonshire - giving people the chance to see first-class sportsmen and sportswomen compete right on their doorsteps, free of charge.

The Time Trial event will mean road closures and diversions for drivers on the day. Arrangements will also be put in place for around 44 residences affected by the route.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said, “We are delighted that the cycling Time Trial is coming through East Dunbartonshire and to be so closely involved in the delivery of the Commonwealth Games, which will be a fantastic sporting spectacle in the summer.

“We will be ensuring that there is minimal disruption to our communities whilst encouraging spectators to come out and support the Time Trial cyclists in what will be a thrilling competition.”

You won’t require a ticket to watch the cycling Time Trial, although there may be limited opportunities to spectate at certain locations.

East Dunbartonshire roads which will be used for the Time Trial include the B812 Auchinairn Road, B819 Crosshill Road, B757 Auchinloch Road and Burnbrae Road.

Glasgow 2014 is working with partners including Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire Councils and Transport Scotland.

Cycling courses have been developed in collaboration with a range of sport, city and tourism groups to ensure that the technical requirements are achieved while balancing a unique opportunity to showcase the city and its surroundings to the world.

“Those undertaking the Time Trial will hit the open roads and head out of the city in a challenging race to the finish. We would encourage everyone to cheer the athletes on and enjoy what will undoubtedly be a unique Commonwealth Games experience.”
