50 YEARS AGO - May 16, 1962

ALMOST every window in the sports pavilion at Lennoxtown playing field was broken by airgun pellets.

James Friel told the District Council the names of people using the airguns were known to the police.

Mr Friel said it was a matter for public concern, and he hoped that parents of youths who owned such guns would warn them of the likely consequences of their misuse.

A number of roof tiles at the pavilion were also damaged.

SCOTTISH Cup fever was spreading in Kirkintilloch as Kirky Equitable Society Ltd announced that all its food shops would close at 1pm on Saturday, May 19, when Rob Roy FC would take to the field at Hampden for the final.

40 YEARS AGO - May 17, 1972

A SIX year long janitors’ dispute over working hours was finally resolved.

Workers in the Dubartonshire area agreed in full to the County Council’s proposals.

Among the terms agreed to included that the 150 janitors would work from 6.30am until 7pm on week days with 24 hours off for meals.

George Crooks, secretary of the janitor association in the county and janitor at Lenzie Academy, said that after the janitors went on strike then went back to allow negotiations to continue, it took only three meetings to come to an agreement with the county council’s emergency committee.

POPULAR Scottish singer and Kirkintilloch woman Moira Anderson was revealed as one of the judges in the Donkey Derby Princess Contest.

The event was held at Woodhead Park in Kirkintilloch on June 3.

30 YEARS AGO - May 19, 1982

STRATHCLYDE Regional Council was asked to commit themselves to a starting date for two major projects - the provision of the long awaited relief roads in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs.

At their monthly meeting, Strathkelvin’s Planning and Development committee was disappointed to note that the long talked about Bishopbriggs relief road was not included in the Transport Policies and Programmes document.

The committee agreed that the district council should write to the region expressing its disappointment that the relief road had been excluded and asked that it be included in the next five year programme. They also agreed to ask for an assurance that the Kirky relief road would not be subjected to any further delays.

A YOUNG girl became known as the ‘Gregory’s Girl’ of Kirky. Helena Sloan (13) was the centre-half for St Ninian’s High School under-13 side. Helena was also signed by Tilloch Juniors.

20 YEARS AGO - May 20, 1992

ANGRY canoeists were up in arms over plans to increase swimming pool charges.

A row erupted after council leisure bosses announced they were going to charge Strathkelvin’s Kayak Club £30 every time they used Kirkintilloch swimming pool.

The canoeists feared their club would go under if they had to stump up the cash and that new talent would be discouraged from joining the club.

But leisure boss Hugh Barrow told the Herald: “I sympathise with the problem that faces the kayak club, but other clubs have got round it and so the kayak club will have to as well.”

YOUNGSTER Stephen Cobain’s dream came true when he won a trip to see his Scotland soccer heroes in the European Championships held in Sweden.

10 YEARS AGO - May 22, 2002

THERE were calls for immediate action to improve conditions at a historic primary school.

West of Scotland MSP Fiona McLeod claimed that many parents were concerned for their children’s safety at Lairdsland Primary School in Kirkintilloch, following an incident during storms when a classroom window blew in.

The MSP said she was shocked by some of the conditions pupils at the school have to put up with, including having to cross a road to go for their lunch and to a nearby church hall for some classes.

The council said it hoped the MSP would support their £150million funding proposals being put to the Scottish Executive in a bid to address deficiencies in many of the authority’s school buildings.

HARESTANES Amateurs won the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park, beating Dumbarton Academy FPs 4-2.

In a hotly contested match, the Kirky side turned in a blistering second half display to clinch the national trophy and a place in the history books.
