Dog chipping sucess for council

During the events, in Wishaw, Airdrie, Coatbridge and Cumbernauld, staff provided free chipping and health checks to over 500 dogs.

The council’s animal welfare officers carry out chipping as part of its Good Dog campaign to promote responsible ownership, and chipping places a small microchip under the dog’s skin which allows it to be identified and returned to its owner if lost.

PDSA’s PetCheck vehicle was at the events to examine pets.

Councillor Helen McKenna, convener of the environmental services committee at NLC, said: “We had a fantastic turn out for the four events run with PDSA, with dog owners keen to make sure their pets are safe and well.

“Chipping gives owners reassurance that if their dog gets lost, they can be quickly reunited using the information stored on the microchip.

“Events like these are part of our commitment to help owners enjoy their pets responsibly within their communities, and supports our anti dog fouling campaign to make sure people clean up after their dogs.”

PDSA Vet Nurse Jen Clarke, added: “We were delighted to meet so many local pets and their owners when our PetCheck vehicle came to North Lanarkshire recently. We were visited by dogs of all shapes and size, ranging from trim terriers to hefty hounds.

North Lanarkshire Council’s animal welfare officers will also be offering free dog chipping at the Dogs Trust Fun Day at Strathclyde Park on Sunday, July 21.
