Done and dusted – Red Road flats come tumbling down

THOUSANDS watched on Sunday as part of the iconic Red Road flats were demolished in a controlled explosion.

The spectacular end for the triple block at Petershill Drive was part of regeneration plans by Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and partners.

The remaining seven multi-storeys at Red Road are due to be demolished by 2017.

Alex McGuire, GHA’s executive director of development and regeneration, said: “We are working closely with our partners to make Glasgow a great place to live and create communities people are proud to live in.

“The Red Road flats were popular in their day and are known around the world, but their time has come to an end. We’re pleased the demolition of the first of the Red Road blocks went according to plan.”

Around 2,000 people were temporarily evacuated from their homes for the demolition and a centre was set up at All Saints Secondary.

Former tenants from the demolished block have been rehoused in new or upgraded GHA homes.

The bottom storeys of the building, which were not taken down during the explosion, will now be demolished by machines. Steel and rubble from the building will also be removed and recycled.

William Sinclair, managing director of demolition contractors Safedem, said: “The Red Road flats have presented a unique series of challenges ranging from the size of the buildings to the steel frame structure. We’re delighted to be involved in another successful demolition operation working with GHA.”
