Double joy for baton bearer

The 73-year-old, who has been involved in athletics all his adult life, will not just be one of the baton bearers - carrying it along the access road to Bearsden Academy when it passes through the district on July 19 - but will also be an assistant chief starter at many of the track races.

However the former senior social work manager is no stranger to international sporting occasions. At the 2012 London Olympics he performed a similar role, marshalling some of the great names in athletics like Mo Farah and Usain Bolt to and from the starting line.

Angus was also involved in The Paralympic Games in London and the Commonwealth Youth Games the following year in the Isle of Man.

Angus said: “Selection as a Queen’s Baton Bearer is a great honour for me, but it would not have been possible without the support of my family, neighbourhood, and other people too numerous to detail. Recognition is more than a personal thing.”

The Victoria Park City of Glasgow Athletic Club member was awarded life membership last year in recognition of his service to the sport. He has been involved with athletics since joining Maryhill Harriers in 1956 and has been involvement with the Olympic and Special Olympics movement, officiating at World Games in USA and Ireland.

In his time he has rubbed shoulders with some of the all time greats, adding: “All athletes prepare differently for races depending on their personality. Athletes like Mo Farah or Linford Christie are totally focused before a race, but someone like Colin Jackson loved to Joke. One of the last things I did for Jessica Ennis was give her a cuddle.

“We just have to make sure everything is right for the athletes at the starting line up.”
