Doubts over Lanark charity cash from transfer of Silver Bell race

DID Lanark get a single penny from the ‘sale’ of its world-famous Silver Bell race and trophy to Hamilton? That is now in doubt after a probe into exactly what benefits came to the Royal Burgh following the controversial handover of the world’s oldest recorded horseracing event three years ago ended in confusion.

As reported in the Gazette at the time, a deal struck between Hamilton Park Racecourse, the charity Cash For Kids and Lanark Community Council was expected to see thousands of pounds coming the Royal Burgh’s way, earmarked for the children of the town.

However, it now appears that Lanark’s share of the profits from the two Silver Bell races held so far at Hamilton has gone mainly, if not entirely, to kids in Rigside and Carstairs.

Now further questions are being asked by the community council to establish if ANY Lanark child has benefited from the deal – or ever will.
