Douglas man Tom Kirkland is champion at recent flower show

Tom Kirkland from Douglas took not only Best in Show but also the Reserve Best in Show title too, at last week’s West of Scotland Pelargonium show held at Dobbies Garden Centre in Ayr.

Tom, who has only been growing Pelargoniums for three years, was quite shocked when he learned of his success.

“It has been such a dreadful year for gardening and it has been so difficult to gauge growing and flowering times for plants due to the weather,” he said.

“A brilliant March followed by a shocking April and May have left plants wondering whether they are coming or going.

“Keeping the humidity and temperature in the greenhouse has been a nightmare but, it has to be said, it is the same for all growers, who exhibited from all parts of the West of Scotland.”

Tom exhibited seven plants and took three firsts, a second and a third prize.
