Douglas villagers saved from limbo by the Gazette

ONE of Clydesdale’s largest villages was in danger of being almost totally cut off from the public transport network this week.

There were always going to be travel problems for the people of Douglas when South Lanarkshire Council announced closure of a substantial stretch of the A70 this week to carry out much-needed road repairs.

What villagers did not expect was the road closure leading to the main bus link between Douglas and Lanark ceasing operations for the duration of the works.

That was until Gazette readers asked us to step in.

The Gazette called the public transport authority Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) on Friday to ask for its help.

Although in no way legally obliged to do so, SPT duly put on a free hourly Glespin-Douglas-Rigside shuttle bus all this week to help villagers at least catch the connection to Lanark from there.
