Dozy motorists parking near schools urged to wise up

Efforts are ongoing in East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire to improve road safety outside schools.

The councils want families to leave the car at home and walk – or if they do have to park, to do so considerately and smartly.

They also want drivers to be careful when passing schools, which are often busy with children crossing roads.

A warning has been issued that vehicles flouting 20mph limits outside schools face police action.

North Lanarkshire Council has launched a ‘Smart Parker’ campaign, highlighting the importance of keeping cars away from school gates.

It also encourages parents to walk or cycle to and from school, if possible, to cut road congestion and promote a healthy lifestyle.

David Devine, East Dunbartonshire’s head of roads and neighbourhood services, said: “The council’s aim is to encourage more families to walk to reduce car numbers and traffic around schools.

“However, when parents choose to use their cars, they are advised to avoid parking on the zig zags outside schools and to always park safely and considerately.”
