Drivers battle flash floods

DRIVERS making their way through the southside on Sunday battled flash floods following a massive amount of rainfall.

After downpours on Saturday and Sunday, areas across Scotland were put on flood alert, and on Pollokshaws Road (pictured), the danger was evident.

Hugh Bell sent in photos of the deluge — taken on Sunday evening — and he told The Extra: “This is the railway bridge over Pollokshaws Road, at the corner of Ravenshall Road. The same road was blocked a few hundred metres away under another bridge, near Shawlands railway station, on the corner of St Ronan’s Drive.

“Local traffic was, needless to say, in chaos”.

Hugh witnessed further flooding outside Cartha Queen’s Park rugby club. He explained: “One side of the road was flooded and drivers were having to swerve onto the wrong side of the road, endangering lives to avoid plunging into the lake left by flooding”.

The southsider issued a call to Glasgow city council to improve drainage facilities, adding: “It’s the same drains every time so why don’t they clear the drains before this happens? An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”.

Facebook follower Pat Lodge Masterman reported further flash floods in King’s Park, thankfully cleared by Monday, and severe flooding was also seen at Carmunock Road.

Thankfully, conditions are improving, with the Met Office predicting little rain and a rise in temperatures — reaching 21 degrees in Glasgow by Friday.
