Drug trafficking pair formally charged

A Lenzie woman arrested in Peru on suspicion of drug trafficking has been formally charged.

Former Lenzie Academy pupil Melissa Reid (20) and Michaella McCollum (20), from Northern Ireland, are accused of trying to smuggle cocaine worth around £1.5 million out of the country.

Both face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty and could also spend up to three years in prison awaiting trial if they are refused bail.

Ms Reid’s father and brother have both flown to Peru to support her.

It is thought that both women will be pleading not guilty to the charges when they make their first court appearance later today.

They have previously claimed that they were forced at gunpoint to carry the drugs.
