East Dunbartonshire Council’s going to look at the future of lock-ups in the area

Around half of the 443 lock-ups within East Dunbartonshire are currently empty, and many are in a state of disrepair, so the council has decided to address the issue.

A feasibility study was carried out to look at the cost effectiveness of each of the 39 lock up sites and provide recommendations for their future.

And the council now plans to consult with residents over the future of some of the lock-ups.

Depute Leader of the Council and Convener of Neighbourhood Services, Ashay Ghai, said: “Demand for locks ups has declined significantly and many are lying empty. Some are also an eyesore, so something really needs to be done.

“In other areas, lock ups are well used and well maintained, so it’s important to look at what sites are working and what ones are not. This is just the start of a process and we want to seek the views of those residents affected.”

During the next few months the council will be in contact with residents affected.
