East Dunbartonshire in mourning after death of legendary councillor

Councillor Charles Kennedy – member for Campsie and Kirkintilloch North – died on Friday, July 13.

The well-known campaigner fought valiantly throughout his life for his community and his constituents.

He was instrumental in the Save Stobhill campaign and numerous other crusades, which he took to with customary gusto.

Rhondda Geekie, East Dunbartonshire Council leader, said: “It is with great sadness that East Dunbartonshire Council reports the death of Councillor Charles Kennedy.

“Charles was a dedicated councillor who worked tirelessly for his constituents and for both Strathkelvin Council and East Dunbartonshire Council. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and worked with him.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Councillor Jack Young, fellow East Dunbartonshire Independent Alliance member, has paid an emotional tribute to his former comrade.

He said: “It’s going to be a tremendous loss. Politically he’s a tremendous loss and also as a friend to me and his constituents he was be so sadly missed.

“He was a giant of a man – when he came into a room he filled it with his presence.

“He was so articulate and well-versed and well-read and politically astute.

“There won’t be his equal again. I’m really sorry for his family and the people he represented. They have suffered a big loss.”

Councillor Kennedy will be laid to rest next week.

A reception and vigil will be held at St Paul’s RC Church, Milton of Campsie, on Monday, July 16, at 6.30pm.

A funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, July 17, at 10am. The funeral will take place at Campsie Cemetery, Lennoxtown, at 11am.
