East Dunbartonshire MSP's insist that EU nationals remain welcome in Scotland

This comes after 71.4 per cent of East Dunbartonshire - along with the rest of Scotland - voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the European Union.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said it would be a “democratic outrage” for Scotland to be removed from the EU against its will.

The Scottish Government is currently investigating options to secure the country’s place in the European Union.

Mr Paterson said: “East Dunbartonshire voted to protect our place in the world’s biggest single market and the jobs and investment that depend on our place in the EU.

“It’s worth pointing out people in Scotland voted remain following a lengthy campaign focusing on free movement and a very positive case for EU membership.

“I want to tell people living in my constituency who are from other countries of the EU, that they are welcome here, and Scotland is a home to you. Their contribution is valued and highly appreciated.

“In the same sense I hope Scots living in other parts of the EU can be treated well and know we have been fighting for their freedom to work, study and live around the EU nations.

“It’s deeply disappointing that the result in Scotland was not echoed across the whole of the UK – but Scotland has spoken decisively and we will make that voice heard.”

Ms Mackay added: “East Dunbartonshire, like the rest of Scotland, voted to remain within the EU.

“As your MSP, I want to tell the citizens of other EU countries living in Bearsden that you remain welcome here.”
