East Ren in second place on recycling

The council has issued thanks to residents of East Renfrewshire after coming second in the national recycling league table.

A total of 56.3 per cent of waste is being recycled or composted, which ERC says is down to “the commitment shown by residents”.

Councillor Vincent Waters said: “It is a balancing act to implement a collection service that is simple and convenient but also delivers quality materials for recycling.

“Residents have asked us why they can’t put paper, plastics, glass and cans for recycling into a single bin. But our driving principle to segregate and maintain the value of materials has served us well as the industry increasingly focuses on quality, not just quantity.”

The environment convener added: “It is hoped that recycling performance will continue to rise. The next target is to reach 70% recycling by 2025.”
