East Renfrewshire will never forget

Holocaust memorial day will be marked with a remembrance event at St Ninian’s high on Tuesday night.

Provost Alastair Carmichael, who will welcome guests on the night, told The Extra: “It is a chance to remember, but also a chance to pass the lessons of the past to the next generation.

“It is important we don’t fall into the trap of believing that the horrors of the Holocaust started and ended with the second world war. Genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur show us clearly that we must all be vigilant.”

The evening event at St Ninian’s will feature a short film, the lighting of a memorial candle, a poetry reading and musical performances.

The main part of the proceedings will be when two senior pupils from each of East Renfrewshire’s seven high schools give their personal accounts of a trip they made in October 2013 to the Auschwitz concentration camp near the Polish city of Krakow.

They will each tell how the visit impacted on their lives and how they felt while they were there and after they left the site of the former Nazi concentration camp.

East Renfrewshire’s MP Jim Murphy last week signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, which honours those who died during the Holocaust.

Jim Murphy said: “It is vital that we never, ever forget the horrors and victims of the Holocaust. This appalling stain on history must always be used as the utmost example of anti-semitism and bigotry.”
