Eastwood high’s award-winning design

The new school — which opened its doors in August and caters to 1,000 pupils — was designed by architecture firm BDP.

GIA judges called the project “unique” and said that Eastwood high — one of two built in a collaboration between East Renfrewshire and Midlothian councils — represented a “warm and welcoming environment”.

Announcing the winner, GIA stated: “The design challenge was to maximise commonality between both schools (Eastwood and Lasswade) where applicable, yet maintain the individual school’s particular identity and character.

“BDP embarked on extensive consultation and engagement working with groups of pupils, staff and the community through interactive workshops before both councils settled on the concept that was the most popular and met the stringent criteria.”

Councillor Elaine Green, East Renfrewshire convener for education and equalities, welcomed the news, commenting: “I have visited Eastwood high many times since it opened and I am always astonished at what a fantastic place it is.

“It’s great news so soon after the official opening.

“Everyone at Eastwood is thrilled with their new school and they will be as delighted as I am that it has won this major award.”

The Scottish Futures Trust school was the first of its kind, and also includes a sports centre for wider community use and two all-weather sports pitches — one of which has been completed.
