Eco-friendly Cumbernauld school celebrates opening of new section of pond

Pupils were joined by staff, environmental workers from North Lanarkshire Council, Country Side Rangers and wildlife group Frog Life.

The event saw experts give guided tours round the newly improved pond, with pupils given the chance to go pond dipping and investigate the types of animals who live in and around the pond.

Head teacher at St Maurice’s, Laurie Byrne said: “We have worked for about 18 months, from the induction stage, looking at revitalising this area and I think it’s great for the pupils at the school because it’s on their door step.

“There were three groups at the school involved.

“The Eco group were involved in planting the wild meadow, we had a group working with Frog Life and studying the regeneration of the water area, and a group of students in the Young Engineers Club were given designs for bird and bat boxes.”

Mr Byrne added: “The pond is now basically a classroom on our door step which opens up so many options for learning.”

The new path at the pond allows greater access to its features and the surrounding forest.
