Ian Chance (53), of Grange Tower, Motherwell, was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and will be under supervision for 18 months.

He admitted being more than three times the limit and having no insurance when driving in High Street, Newarthill, on December 9.

Chance has already been banned twice for drink-driving though he had his four-year ban for the second offence cut short to help him get a job.

Defence agent Tom Watters said the latest case showed the effects of heavy drinking the night before. His client needs educated on how long alcohol stays in the body.

Mr Watters told the court: “He had been drinking till 4am. His mother asked him to pick up her car at 2pm and he was still over the limit.”
