Elderly woman dies after road crash

An elderly woman has died after being struck by a van in Kirkintilloch.

The woman was walking south on the west side of Merkland Drive near to a bus turning circle at the entrance to a nature reserve around 6.40am this morning (Tuesday).

She was struck by a silver Ford Transit van, which was driving out of the bus turning circle and turning right and south into Merkland Drive.

The woman was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, but sadly died a short time later.

The 48-year-old driver of the van was uninjured.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

Sergeant Joe McGuckien, at the road policing complex said: “The area was quiet at the time of the incident but we believe there may have been a few vehicles passing this location.

“The nearby nature reserve is also very popular with local dog walkers and I’d like to speak to any passing motorists or local dog walkers who may have witnessed this incident.”
