Elvanfoot residents unhappy at poor state of local church

FEARS have been expressed that mourners at a village cemetery could be hit by slates falling from the roof of the former Elvanfoot Church in Dumfries Road.

The concerns follow an alleged recent vandalism attack on the privately-owned church building – closed to the public for around 20 years – in which the culprits smashed one stained glass window and gained entry before removing another window and stealing it.

Elvanfoot Residents Association member Colin Mackie said: “I think the church is being allowed to become dangerous, which the local community is very upset about.

“It would be very distressing for someone to be at the burial ceremony of a loved one and under threat of slates landing on them, in the vicinity of a church with smashed windows.

“I don’t think the church is safe. Somebody could be laying flowers in the cemetery and next thing they could be hit by a slate from the roof.”
