Elvanfoot Suspension Bridge set to be saved?

IT appears that the future of the Elvanfoot Suspension Bridge may now be secure – thanks to the efforts of Crawford Community Council and Elvanfoot Residents Association.

The Gazette reported recently that local resident Ralph Barker was unhappy at the state of the B-Listed structure – and South Lanarkshire Council had lodged plans to demolish it.

Thankfully the council issued a statement stating that it had delayed plans to dismantle the bridge to allow the recently identified owner a chance to make repairs.

However, after hearing the news of the bridge’s impending demise, Crawford Community Council members started working behind the scenes to find a solution to save the bridge, which has stood since the late 19th century.

Having notified Historic Scotland, Crawford Community Council chairman Robert Gemmell hopes that funding can now be found to bring the bridge back to its former glory.

The community council wants to work with Elvanfoot Residents Association to secure funding.
