An ambulance worker was left injured after they were attacked while responding to a call on Greenside Street, Glasgow amid Bonfire Night chaos. The crew was attacked, alongside police, as they responded to a report of an injured man.
Emergency services were forced to retreat from the scene, before Operation Amberlight specialist officers were deployed.
In videos posted to social media, people can be seen running from a police van stopped in the middle of a street. Fireworks then explode inside, before the van ignites. Later pictures show a smouldering wreck.
A Police Scotland statement read: “Police in Glasgow responded alongside the Scottish Ambulance Service to a report of an injured male in Greenside Street at around 7.55pm on Thursday, 5 November.
“During this time both crews were targeted with fireworks resulting in a police vehicle being set alight and seriously damaged. One of the ambulance staff sustained a minor injury.
“Operation Amberlight specialist resources were deployed, and one male has been arrested.
“Inquiries are ongoing and police maintain a presence in the area”
The attack was one of few major incidents across the city, with Bonfire Night passing largely without incident.
There were chaotic, but peaceful, scenes from Castlemilk where a large bonfire had been built.
Police Scotland had anticipated the potential for widespread disorder with a number of events lining up, including Celtic’s Europa League tie with Beşiktaş at Celtic Park.
In preparation, around 1,700 extra officers were deployed to the streets around Scotland as part of Operation Moonbeam. It appears that the mobilisation largely worked.
