End of an era as stalwart passes

On Saturday morning, Enid, the last chairwoman of Giffnock Residents Association, died of heart failure.

The former community councillor was a winner of the prestigious Eastwood person of the year award.

Among her many struggles on behalf of the community, Mrs Penny was a key figure in the fight to save the Victoria Infirmary, as secretary of the Friends of the Victoria and Save the Vicky campaign.

Council leader Jim Fletcher, who had known Enid since his election as an Eastwood councillor in 1988, told The Extra: “She was a long-standing resident of Giffnock and doughty fighter for the area.

“She had a particular interest in and detailed knowledge of Braidbar Quarry and her contributions on that issue were always helpful and illuminating.

“Very few people had her knowledge of the history of Giffnock and her passing feels like the end of an era.

“She will be very badly missed in local forums such as the community council.”

Former provost Alan Steele added: “Always prompt and outspoken, she will be remembered by all — whether in agreement or suffering Enid’s withering look on controversial issues. Enid joined in robustly as a member of Giffnock’s community council, specialising in planning and environment issues.”

Enid is survived by daughter Roslyn Connell and son Graeme Penny. Her husband Jim died 11 years ago. The funeral is tomorrow (Friday), 1pm, at Linn crematorium.
