End of an era signals start of new chapter for Gazette

It's the end of an era for the Gazette this week with the closure of our office in Lanark's Wellgate, but it's also the start of a new and exciting chapter for the paper and our website.

The increasing role of new technology and meeting increasing production costs have been a challenge for many newspapers throughout the country and the Gazette is no exception.

However, although we are closing our office, editorial and advertising staff will still be based in the local area, and will continue to offer the valued and trusted service that Gazette readers and advertisers have come to expect.

The Gazette is at the heart of the community and will continue to carry out that role. But, as you will no doubt know, the demands and behaviours of newspaper readers and advertisers are changing rapidly, and we are continually evaluating how to best serve the community.

You will also no doubt be aware that the regional media industry continues to operate in challenging times. The effects of the economic downturn and changes in both how readers consume local news and local businesses market themselves impact on our revenues.

It’s a challenge that is certainly not unique to us – many companies within our industry are taking steps to come to terms with the changing balance of the business we’re in.

Only by adapting our business accordingly – and that, unfortunately, means sometimes making some difficult decisions - will we continue to not just survive but to thrive.

Modern technology means our teams can operate from anywhere and, rather than sitting behind a desk, we can be out and about in the area, talking to more people and getting involved in more of the stories that matter.

We hope you understand and will continue to show the same loyal support to the Gazette as you always have.
