THE highly emotive subject of assisted suicide was discussed at an evening hosted by Lanark Presbytery.

The Rev Sarah Ross acted as compere at the event - held on Monday in St John's Church in Carluke - presenting the End of Life Bill, which is currently going through the Scottish Parliament.

The bill, proposed by independent MSP Margo MacDonald, could see

terminally ill or permanently physically incapable people deciding to take their own life legally — if two formal written requests to a medical practitioner are ratified.

Clydesdale MSP Karen Gillon will have a free vote in Parliament on the Bill, which could be decided in Holyrood in November.

Karen said: "This is one of the most important decisions that we will make as a parliament.

"I have to represent the interests of my constituency and if people say to me they agree with the bill then I would have to state that case.

"However, at the moment the overwhelming majority of people I have

spoken to have concerns about the bill and I share those concerns."

The Church of Scotland, Methodist Church and Salvation Army have already made their opposition to the bill clear.
