This follows a decision by Dumfries and Galloway, which previously announced its intention to quit.

It is understood GCC and a number of other local authorities are set to follow suit amid arguments over funding.

East Ren could also soon re-consider its position within the umbrella group, which negotiates with the Scottish government on behalf of councils.

East Renfrewshire council leader Jim Fletcher told The Extra: “If lots of councils do quit, COSLA will change as an entity.

“We would then need to look at its position. We are unwilling to change our financial contribution.”
