One reader who did not want to be named stated: “They have failed to lift the food waste for two cycles now.

“The explanation for failure to uplift this last week was adverse weather conditions.

“What was the excuse for the first failure to uplift food waste, no adverse weather conditions on that occasion?

“This also encourages rat infestations. If the people of Cumbernauld now stop recycling their North Lanarkshire Council should be held responsible for not fulfilling public and recycling services .”

A council spokesperson said: “Residents were advised that no food/garden collections would be carried out between Monday December 21, 2020 and Sunday January 3, 2021. The brown bins were planned to be collected on the next fortnightly cycle.

“Last week, because of the severe weather some bin collections were not completed.

“Residents were advised to leave black bins, paper/cardboard and glass/metal/plastic bins out and they would be emptied as soon as possible.

“However, for the brown bins, residents were asked to return the bin to their property and it would be collected on the next allocated collection day. This allowed the service to prioritise more heavily utilised bins.”
