Cats die from poisoning in Newarthill

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information following the suspected poisonings of three cats in Newarthill in the last few weeks.

The charity was alerted by a concerned resident of Laxford Way after two cats who live there, Talu and Billy, became seriously ill.

Both received veterinary treatment before sadly passing away.

The society was informed that these cats had potentially ingested a toxic substance which caused Billy to have kidney failure, and Talu to have liver failure.

Sadly the Scottish SPCA received another report of another stricken feline in nearby Burns Way who unfortunately had to be put to sleep.

The vet determined the death was caused by poisoning -but the charity accepts too that the deaths could have an accident due to the careless storage of a liquid that causes grave harm to animals.

Scottish SPCA inspector, Jack Marshall said:“Two cats from the same street, and another just one street away, apparently ingested a toxic substance which is suspected to be antifreeze.

“We would urge everyone to be vigilant with their disposal of antifreeze as this can cause a very slow and painful death to pets.

“It could be that the cats have gained access to a nearby garage or area where antifreeze is not stored safely.

“If anyone has any information that toxic substances are being deliberately used against animals then we would urge them to contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
