Cumbernauld shop units become part of art exhibition

Empty shop units in Cumbernauld Town Centre now have a new look thanks to a project designed to encourage people to get out and about.

The lottery-funded Cumbernauld Living Landscape project has seen several shop windows transformed into works of art to remind people of the wealth of green spaces and wildlife havens to be found around the town.

The installations were formally opened on Friday as project members conducted guests on walking tours around the centre to view the artworks and explain their significance.

Project manager Iain MacKenzie said: “The town’s green spaces provide vital clean air, water and areas to relax for the 50,000 people that live in Cumbernauld.

“By creating these engaging works of art, the Cumbernauld Living Landscape wants to make people more aware of the nature on their doorstep.

“These six Living Windows reflect six green spaces in the town and were modelled on Cumbernauld Glen Wildlife Reserve, Cumbernauld House Park, Cumbernauld Community Park, Palacerigg Country Park, Langriggs and Ravenswood Nature Reserve.”

The project organisers are asking people to send pictures demonstrating how they use these spaces to the Cumbernauld Living Landscape Facebook page or tweeting @ScotWildlie with #LivingWindow.
