East Renfrewshire leads Scottish recycling chart

The latest figures, which were released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), cover the period from January to December 2019 and show East Renfrewshire as the only local authority to recycle more than 60 per cent of their waste.

With residents recycling almost 33,000 tonnes of waste in 2019, the Council achieved an increase on the 2018 results from 66.2% to 67.8%. This is the fourth year in a row that East Renfrewshire has SEPA table.

Councillor Alan Lafferty, Convener for Environment, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for East Renfrewshire. Increased recycling is not only beneficial to the environment, but it also helps us save significantly on landfill costs. We would like to say thank you to all of our residents for helping to make East Renfrewshire a cleaner and greener place for all to enjoy.

“We are absolutely committed to continually improving our performance, and at the start of 2020 joined neighbouring authorities in the Clyde Valley Residual Waste Project.

“This partnership, which is the first of its kind in Scotland, will make a significant contribution to managing household waste more effectively. Waste that would previously been sent to landfill, is now transformed into low carbon electricity. We look forward to seeing the results of this important project.”
