Glebe car park recycling facility may shut

A Bearsden resident has hit out at plans by East Dunbartonshire Council to remove a community recycling facility.

The council is proposing to scrap the recycling bank at Glebe car park.

A note at the site suggests that people should use the recycling facility at Asda instead.

Resident Ron Clark told the Herald: “East Dunbartonshire Council proposes to remove the community recycle facility situated at the foot of the Glebe car park in Bearsden village.

“This would be a retrograde step as the facility is extensively used by the local community, especially those who do not have their own transport, and contravenes the council’s stated policy of encouraging recycling wherever possible.

“The note at the site invites residents to phone the main council number to query this decision.

“I have tried this on numerous occasions, in order to record my opposition to this plan. The only time I was able to make contact with a person, I was assured that I would be responded to by the staff members in charge of the decision. This has not yet happened. Further attempts to contact the council have been fruitless.”

The Herald contacted the council for a response.

Thomas Glen, Depute Chief Executive - Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said: “The council is currently carrying out a review of all community recycling sites throughout East Dunbartonshire in response to a drop in their use in recent years due to the fact most residents have recycling facilities at home.

“However, no decisions have been made about any of the sites and all comments will be taken into account before anything is decided.

“If any residents would like to have their say about any of our sites they can contact the Waste Services team by calling 0300 123 4510 or by emailing
