It soon became apparent to onlookers that he needed assistance.

Together they succeeded in bringing him to shore but his condition gave grounds for concern and an ambulance was summoned to take him to hospital in Wishaw.

However, it emerged that the man could not be saved as a result of the incident.

An appeal had been put out to discover his identity and his family came forward within hours

Police have thanked those who helped them with these enquiries.

The victim is not being named and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

A helicopter and search party were scrambled at the scene but the man’s body was found in the water shortly afterwards.
