MSP: Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme will ‘help clean up our streets’

Milngavie MSP Gil Paterson has welcomed the parliamentary vote to bring Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme into law – although it won’t be until 2022 because of the pandemic.

Under the scheme, people will be able to return a container to shops in return for a 20p fee which was paid when the drink was purchased.

The local MSP said deposit return schemes are already established in many countries where they are helping to reduce litter.

Mr Paterson added: The Deposit Return Scheme in Scotland will help clean up the streets and change attitudes towards recycling.

“In countries with similar schemes, people will go out of their way to pick up discarded bottles or cans so they can hand them in, making a truly self-sustaining anti-littering and pro-recycling society.

“It is excellent to see some good news that differs from the pandemic and I think we can all look forward to the scheme rolling out in 2022.”
