Paul Masterton MP and Jackson Carlaw MSP say it’s important to gauge residents’ response in advance of any future scheme to remedy the site - which is riddled with dangerous old mine workings and fenced off from public access.

A scheme by MacDonald Estates was abandoned in 2008 with the onset of recession, and a proposal by Advance Construction put forward in April this year hasn’t so far been taken any farther forward - and the firm has declined to comment on whether it has shelved the idea altogether.

Meanwhile former Provost Allan Steele has urged action to solve the area’s most intractable blight - which has rendered some homes unsaleable.

However local man Paul Drury won significant support during the council elections for his vigorous opposition to any plan which would involve erosion of Huntly Park, and has also warned of the risks posed by development of a site poisoned by industrial chemicals.
