Rumaisa wins exclusive WWF prize

17-year-old Rumaisa Zubairi beat applicants from across Scotland to win a unique experience shadowing the WWF Scotland team at an exclusive Earth Hour event at the Scottish Parliament.

Applicants were tasked with creating a short poem describing climate change and why it’s an important issue for young people. Her winning poem, entitled ‘Climate of Uncertainty’, outlined a future where children would study in history either human’s destruction of nature or its salvation, depending on our actions today.

WWF’s Earth Hour is an event that seeks to focuses the world’s attention on our planet, and the need to protect it. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, March 25 at 8.30pm.

Jackson Carlaw, MSP for Eastwood said: “I am delighted that Rumaisa from Williamwood High School had the opportunity to read her poem on climate change at our Scottish Parliament.

“She will surely be delighted to have had the opportunity to work with WWF Scotland - it certainly was a pleasure to meet her.

“As a society there is much that we can to protect our environment for the future from the unnecessary waste of resources and hopefully Rumaisa shall continue her good work in this regard for all of Scotland.”

Rumaisa said: “It was a really amazing opportunity and great to see what goes on behind the scenes at the Parliament and the preparation that goes on ahead of an event like this.

“It was good to meet so many MSPs, including those local to me, and that they were interested in what I was doing and what my plans are for the future.

“I will be encouraging all my friends to sign up to Earth Hour and get involved on 25th March.”
