Terminus for Shieldhall Tunnel after 15-month dig

It's five times longer than the Clyde Tunnel and runs all the way from Craigton to Queen's Park, via Bellahouston and Pollok parks.

But most people still have little idea of the mammoth tunnelling operation that has been proceeding underneath the south side in a bid to dramatically improve the area’s sewage system,

Now the £100million Shieldhall Tunnel project has been completed, bringing to an end one of Scottish Water’s most ambitious and challenging major works of recent times.

The landmark event happened this week when the state of the art Tunnel Boring Machine “broke through” beneath Queen’s Park to end a subterranean journey that started 15 months ago.

The route of the tunnel was chosen to maximise the use of parkland and minimise disruption.

It will increase capacity and alleviate pressure on the existing network by providing additional storm water storage.

It will transfer combined sewer flows (surface water such as rainfall and waste water from properties) and provide storm storage (of heavy rainfall).
