Event discusses poverty

The Craigmarloch headquarters of the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA) was the venue as Cumbernauld and Kilsyth politicians MP Gregg McClymont and MSP Mark Griffin took part in Challenge Poverty week.

At the event, which was hosted by SSBA chief executive Andy Wynd, the politicians discussed the need to challenge stereotypes about poverty and listened to the voices of those experiencing poverty and hardship.

One of those voices included Daniel Miller, who is the father of two sons born with spina bifida.

Daniel, who has lost one of his sons to this disease, discussed the bedroom tax and the challenges it posed for his family.

MP McClymont, said: “Challenge Poverty Week is highlighting how recent changes to the welfare system, such as the introduction of the bedroom tax and a benefit cap, have unfairly affected the most vulnerable.”

MSP Griffin added: “It was very good of Andy Wynd to host us for Challenge Poverty Week.

“Families of disabled children continue to struggle with the cost of living and we must be vigilant in highlighting the needs of the most vulnerable in our society”.
