Exciting new playpark is in full swing

The project was led for three years by the voluntary group, Friends of Stepps Park. They were successful in securing funding for the new Bluebell Playpark.

Officially opening the park was David Stirling, great-grandson of Colonel Sprott who donated the park to the area.

The park now boasts a bespoke tree-house structure, two sand play areas, a woodland bike trail, a mature climbing tree, a ‘flying-fox’ zip slide and well designed swings.

There’s also informal seating for social gatherings, a hammock, decking, bark and grass surfaces, a planted maze and a range of subtle planting designs to rejuvenate the tree canopy, attract wildlife and help with drainage.

Maggie Li, from Friends of Stepps Park, said: “The park has exceeded our expectations and we are truly delighted with the end result. To see the community come along in there hundreds to the opening day was the icing on the cake.”

Police are keeping an eye on the park after recent reports of vandalism.

The cash for the project was given by the Environmental Key Fund, WREN and Viridor Credits Environmental Company, all through the Landfill Communities Fund. North Lanarkshire Council are the designated contributing third party, committing 10 per cent match funding.
