Explosion rocks Turfholm, Lesmahagow

A MASSIVE explosion rocked an otherwise peaceful Sunday morning in Turfholm, Lesmahagow.

One local couple’s house was destroyed as a result of the gas explosion – but the 73-year-olds both miraculously escaped with minor injuries.

Also rescued were the couple’s five Afghan hounds, which escaped unscathed. It is believed the retired couple are dog breeders.

Fire crews and Strathclyde Police were alerted around 10.20am. Around 30 people in ten nearby homes were evacuated. The explosion also rocked the neighbouring guide hall and bowling club.

The local couple were taken to Wishaw General Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and later released. They are believed to be recovering from the shock with relatives.

Workers from British Gas ensured the area’s safety but National Grid gas servies is still investigating the cause of the explosion.

At the height of the incident, seven fire crews attended, along with numerous police officers. A helicopter was also seen in the vicinity.
