Family fun and trials of strength at Games

Glasgow's 'last remaining conservation village' '“ Carmunnock '“ will be the setting for a spectacular Highland Games event this month.

The Carmunnock International Highland Games takes place on May 28 at the King George V Playing Field.

It will feature a variety of red-blooded strength events including Vadim’s Highland Warrior Challenge.

This fascinating event which involves, for example, log fighting, freestyle combat and stick fighting – along with better-known Games events.

There’s also a Community Challenge event, with locals competing in two-man teams in events such as “The two-man Pole Push”, “Bale Rolling” and “Taxi Pull”.

Then – “strictly for ladies only” – there’s the hugely-popular Welly Throw contest, while for children there are races for all age groups, and lots of fun activities to get involved in.

Other attractions include stalls selling refreshments and food, a fully licensed beer garden with live music by local musician Fozzy, stalls selling a wide range of gifts and goods. Then there’s traditional Scottish bagpipes and dancers, “fabulous tribal sounds” by Macumba, bouncy castles, fun rides, races, tattoos, face painting, caricatures, jewellery and more.

The gates are open at 11.30am on the day, and admission is £6 for adults, £4 for children under 16 and OAPs, and no charge for under-fives.

Tickets can be bought from Linda Edmunds, Booth’S Village Shop, Busby Road, Carmunnock, and at the gate on the day.

Last year’s Games chieftain was TV Sanjeev Kohli of Still Game and River City fame, and this year’s personality is to be announced shortly.
