Farmers must bear slurry regulations in mind
As the frosty start to December is forecast to continue for at least the next week or so, farmers need to bear current regulations in mind if considering spreading slurry, to minimise the risk of diffuse pollution and potential financial penalties.
Given the atrocious weather and ground conditions this year, there will be a strong temptation for farmers to spread slurry on frozen ground, as this may be the first opportunity for some time to gain access to land for spreading.
It is important to remember that spreading slurry on frozen ground is a breach of SEPA’s General Binding Regulations (GBR’s) and the Scottish Government’s Cross Compliance rules. Breaching these regulations can result in a hefty financial penalty.
