Fate of Lesmahagow Jubilee Hall decided

A MEETING to decide the fate of Lesmahagow Jubilee Hall saw a working committee formed in the first stage of the process to buy the hall.

The Friends of the Jubilee Hall will work towards carrying out a feasibility study to find out what needs to be done to the building, with the ultimate goal of a community buyout of the hall from South Lanarkshire Council.

The meeting, organised by Lesmahagow Community Council, was attended by a number of groups which use the hall on a regular basis.

Also in attendance was South of Scotland MSP Aileen Campbell.

Community council member Jeff Frew told the meeting that a precedent had been set in Stonehouse where its Development Trust was currently carrying out a feasibility study to buy the Public Institute Hall there.

Jeff said: "The first thing the working committee would have to do is to get a feasibility study and find out if the hall would be a liability to take on.

"What I would say is that it's certainly possible to get the appropriate funding for the hall if the building is viable.

"South Lanarkshire Council has set a precedent with the Institute in Stonehouse even though that particular village is having a new Lifestyles Centre constructed at the moment."
