Fears for Lanark St Mary’s pupils’ safety

FEARS expressed by parents of Lanark school children that their youngsters might have to be bussed to and from Carluke for their education through two winters appear to have been justified.

Lanark’s St Mary’s Primary School was closed in November last year for a £9.3 million replacement school to be built on the Smyllum site, the youngsters being decanted in the meantime to the redundant former Crawforddyke Primary in Carluke.

The council estimates that the rebuilding project will take twelve months, meaning that the new St Mary’s won’t be ready until at least January 2012.

So pupils and staff will have to endure two winters travelling to and from Carluke – as originally feared by parents.
