Fears for 'stranded' Lanark pupils...in Carluke

OVER 100 Lanark children and their teachers were almost stranded overnight in Carluke.

The parents of children attending St Mary's Primary were taking no pleasure in saying "We told you so" as their children were nearly trapped miles from home by Monday's heavy snowfall.

Concerns that this might happen were voiced in the autumn when a group of St Mary's parents bitterly complained about South Lanarkshire Council's decision to temporarily decant their children to the redundant Crawforddyke Primary in Carluke while their Smyllum Road school underwent refurbishment.

When the heavy snows hit on Monday, those fears were proved to be justified.

Just a few hours after the children were taken to Carluke, whiteout conditions hit the area.

And a parent contacted the Gazette to say that the bus company initially said it would be unsafe to take the children back to Lanark.

An angry St Mary's mum, one of the original delegation which approached the Gazette, said: "We knew something like this would happen.

"It was always a daft idea to transport the kids to a different town during the winter months."

The council said this week: "Our priority as always is the safety and

welfare of children and young people."
