Fears over safety of turbines that clutter Clydesdale countryside

There are fears over the safety of some of Clydesdale’s many wind turbines as a turbine manufacturer went into receivership.

Proven Energy, based in East Kilbride, called in the receivers over the weekend after sales of its flagship P35-2 turbine were halted amid safety.

A faulty braking mechanism could cause one of its blades to fly off.

Around 500 of the turbines have been erected in Scotland alone - with many of them being used on farms and smallholdings.

And with the huge increase in single turbine applications in Clydesdale in the past year, there is a fear that the faulty product design could cause problems for local farmers, who have been given permission to erect them.

Blair Nimmo, Head of Restructuring at receivers KPMG, said: “Although Proven has achieved substantial turnover growth in recent years, the company has made significant losses as it focused on product development, making it difficult for the business to cope financially with the cost of the product failure.”
