Fears remain over asbestos at Lanark Racecourse

A reader contacted the Gazette to ask, after noting that the Heras security fence – which for over a decade had surrounded an area contaminated with asbestos – had been pulled down and replaced with an ordinary farming fence.

“Now that the Heras fencing has come down does that mean there is now no risk to the public from the asbestos or has the site been decontaminated?” she asked.

“There are large numbers of children playing sports at the racecourse or using the equestrian centre next door.

“Are they, or innocent dog walkers like us, at risk?”

A spokeswoman for South Lanarkshire Council said that the contaminated land had been adjacent to the site of the grandstand, where a building had been demolished by a former council but there was now very little if any risk to the public.
